About Darwin By Niharika Seb

Darwin is a city situated on northern territory of Australia. It is located northerly of all other Australian capital cities, hence called as capital city of northern territory of Australia. It also acts as Top End's regional centre of Australia. Darwin is one of the smallest cities of northern Australia. This small port city has grown to a modern and multicultural city within a short span of time.
Geographically, Darwin is an important city because of its proximity to Asia. Darwin is the Australian gateway to the Asian countries like east Timor, and Indonesia. Darwin comes under the tropical savannah climate with dry and wet seasons during the year. Average maximum temperature stands same through out all seasons.
There are two major economic sectors tourism and mining, working together in Darwin's economy. The total industry production from energy industry and mining is more than $2.5 per year. Darwin's soil is abundant with minerals like zinc, gold, bauxite, manganese and so on. Energy production of this city mainly concentrated off-shore mining on Timor Sea. Also there are uranium deposits near Darwin city. Another sector which contributes for the economy is federal spending. Northern part of Australia, especially Darwin is known for military involvement. This gives more job opportunities for Darwin youth.
In 2001, more than 11,000 people from Darwin got employment in Australian army. Darwin is expected to grow more in the following years as port city, by the completion of railway link which connects to Asia. Darwin is a swiftly growing city by skyscrapers. Many construction projects are launched in this city in 2005. One of them is renovation of wharf precinct, which incorporates an exhibition center, housing apartments and a large convention center. A safe swimming lagoon and large wave pool are also under construction. Another project is Chinatown project with an elaborated plan for multi level car parking area, dining outlets and Chinese themed retail stores.
Tourism plays a pivotal role in Darwin's economy. Darwin is a hot destination for tourists, by the presence of two national parks, Kakadu National Park and Litchfield National Park. Katherine gorge is another attraction for foreigners. Darwin is famous for seasonal tourism, because of peculiar climate of the place. Unlike four, six traditional seasons are available in Darwin. Sunny and warm nature can be seen from May to September. Green season starts form October and last in April. This season rejuvenate the land by monsoonal rains and thunderstorms. Darwin's tourism season is cooler dry season which lasts 6 months from April to September.
Nearly 8% of the people live in Darwin, is tourists, who come to the city during dry and wet seasons. It is the largest industry which offers employment for many people in northern territory of Australia. More than 1.38 million people visited Darwin city during 2005 -2006. It is calculated that tourists spent $1.5 billion last year and lived here for 9.2 million nights. Tourism industry made more than 14,000 jobs in northern territory last year.
